Probiotics and Immune Health Science
A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine provides new insight into
positive ways to enhance human immunity. In the study, endurance athletes were given
either lactobacillus fermentum twice daily or were given a placebo over a period of 4 months.
Those receiving the lactobacillus supplement suffered less than half the number of days of
with sypmptoms of respiratory infections than those given the placebo. The study suggested
that the levels of interferon gamma in the body doubled as a result of ingesting the
lactobacillus culture. It appears that it may be possible for individuals to enhance immunity by
ingesting probiotic cultures.
